Wildfire burns hundreds of acres south of Tamiami Trail in Miami-Dade
A wildfire was burning south of Tamiami Trail in Miami-Dade County on Tuesday.
The U.S. Forest Service said the flames broke out at around 5 p.m. Monday and have burned 450 acres. The blaze was 0% contained but was not threatening homes, authorities said.
Drivers headed west on Tamiami Trail from Miami will be able to see the flames, just a few miles west of the Miccosukee Resort and Casino and Krome Avenue.
“The winds are not that strong, which is helpful when you’re trying to battle wildfires like this,” NBC6 meteorologist Adam Berg said, “but the direction matters as far as, do you see smoke?”
A northeast breeze is sending the plume of smoke inland toward less populated areas.
“As we go into very early on Thursday, winds may start switching to the south and southwest [toward the coast],” Berg said. “That could then be a little bit more of an issue if the blaze is still there.”
Tamiami Trail remains open in both directions.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
