DeSantis releases proposed Florida redistricting map that could give GOP 4 more seats
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday released a proposal to redraw Florida’s congressional map as Republicans look at the Sunshine State to protect their slim majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
DeSantis’ proposed map looks to add four seats that will favor Republicans, but state officials could face legal hurdles because the Florida constitution prohibits the passage of any political map that shows the “intent” of favoring one party over the other.
Last week, Democrats in Virginia were able to get voters to approve a map that could give them as many as four seats.
While maps are usually redrawn after every decade, the redistricting battle has been ongoing in the country after Texas Republicans redrew their state’s map last year.
Democrats then responded in California.
The Legislature this week will have a special session to consider redrawing congressional districts, installing regulations on artificial intelligence and expanding exemptions to vaccine requirements for children attending public K-12 schools.
