Deerfield Beach man arrested in theft of nearly $250K in precious coins, BSO says
A Deerfield Beach man has been arrested in the alleged theft of nearly $250,000 worth of precious metal coins, authorities said.
Salvatore J. De Rosa, 34, was arrested by the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Thursday on a first-degree grand theft charge, records showed.
According to an arrest report, on Nov. 13, 2024, the victim sent $246,599 of precious metal coins to who he thought was a legitimate gold and silver dealer named AMG Rarities for the purpose of selling the coins.
The coins were shipped from Montana to a UPS store in Deerfield Beach but as soon as the coins were received, the phone numbers and emails used for communication of the deal “went dark,” the report said.
A few days later the victim received four boxes full of printer paper.
Investigators found De Rosa had signed for the boxes of coins at the UPS store and he was interviewed in January 2025, telling investigators he signed for the boxes but never spoke to the sender, didn’t know who he was, never opened the boxes and sent them back the next day at his own expense of about $300, the report said.
Data showed the boxes weighed 81 pounds when they were sent to Deerfield Beach and 31.3 pounds on the way back to Montana, the report said.
Investigators also found a mailbox at the UPS store was rented by De Rosa under the name of a business, and the store had a business card that listed De Rosa as the owner and featured graphics of gold and silver coins, the report said.
Multiple attempts were made to find DeRosa last year, the report said, but it’s unknown what led to his arrest on Thursday.
Jail records showed De Rosa was being held without bond on Friday.
