Suspect arrested in fatal triple shooting at Taste of Miami Karnival, police say

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal triple shooting during a festival in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood over the weekend, police said.

Jamesly Mezime, 22, was arrested Thursday in the shooting that happened late Sunday near the main stage of the Taste of Miami Karnival in the area of Northeast 2nd Avenue and Northeast 62nd Street, Miami Police officials said.

According to an arrest report, several officers were working at the event when gunfire erupted around 11:20 p.m.

Witnesses said the event quickly turned to chaos, as one moment the crowd was celebrating and the next they were running for their lives in what was described as a stampede.

Video showed people fleeing as officers and ambulances responded to the shooting.

Officers found one man shot in the chest, a second man with multiple gunshot wounds, and a woman who’d been shot in her legs.

All three were rushed to a local hospital where the man who was shot in the chest, identified as 23-year-old Kitchner Cyrille, died from his injuries.

The report said multiple surveillance cameras captured a physical altercation involving multiple people near the stage.

The video showed Mezime pull a gun from his waistband and shoot Cyrille, the report said.

Family members of Cyrille also told detectives that a witness said Mezime shot Cyrille, the report said.

Surveillance video also showed a vehicle parking near the festival and five males getting out and entering the festival, the report said.

The video showed the five males, including one believed to be Mezime, walking through the crown directly behind Cyrille, the report said.

Footage showed the other males removing items from Cyrille’s pockets after he’d been shot and was laying on the ground, the report said.

Mezime and the other males were seen returning to the vehicle and fleeing the scene, the report said.

On Thursday, detectives located the vehicle, stopped it, and Mezime was taken into custody, police said.

Mezime was booked into jail and faces one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

“Detectives worked tirelessly, reviewing video footage, gathering intelligence, and conducting surveillance on the suspect,” police said in a statement Friday. “This arrest highlights the dedication, teamwork, and unwavering commitment of the Miami Police Department to identifying and apprehending individuals who commit crimes within the City of Miami.”
