Multi-vehicle crash leaves one person, dog dead overnight in West Philadelphia

A high-speed collision in West Philadelphia left one person and a dog dead early Friday morning, police said.

According to police, the fatal crash occurred at 4:01 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026 at the intersection of 48th and Walnut streets.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that a black Dodge Durango was traveling westbound on Walnut Street at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Durango reportedly failed to stop for a steady red light, striking a gray 2017 Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling northbound on 48th Street.

Following the initial impact, police said the Malibu struck four unoccupied parked vehicles on 48th St. before coming to a stop.

Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu dead at 4:18 a.m., police said. A dog traveling inside the Malibu also died in the crash.

The operator of the Durango, a 25-year-old man, along with two passengers, a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old, was transported by police to a nearby hospital. All three people in the Durango are reported to have sustained various minor injuries.

No arrests have been made at this time as investigators continue to process the scene, according to police.

One resident, Avery Kirk, told NBC10 he woke up to the sound of the collision and found severely damaged vehicles outside his home. One car ended up on his property, damaging his car and front steps.

Kirk added that crashes are a recurring problem in the area.
