Cape May Zoo welcomes 2nd capybara litter within 6 months

The Cape May Zoo welcomed two new capybara pups on April 14, the zoo announced on Monday.

The adorable capybara babies were mothered by Buttercup, an adult capybara who also gave birth to a litter in Oct. 2025, the zoo said.

Buttercup and her two pups are under careful observation by the zoo’s animal keepers and veterinary staff, but visitors can periodically get a glimpse of the fuzzy friends from the bridge at the capybara habitat, the zoo said.

“What a wonderful joy to be blessed with additional capybara pups,” said Cape May County Commissioner Vice-Director Andrew Bulakowski. “Families love this exhibit, and their love will only grow with the sights of these new additions.”

The two new pups are joining a capybara habitat that includes four adults, including Buttercup, and five older capybara pups, the zoo said.

Capybaras, originally from South America, are the world’s largest rodent species.
