Parkland canal crash that killed 2 in fleeing BMW began with Sunrise armed robbery, cops say
A crash into a Parkland canal on Friday that killed two fleeing suspects and has a third facing charges began with an armed robbery in Sunrise, police said Monday.
Sunrise Police said officers had responded to the armed robbery at 3801 North University Drive, a shopping plaza, just before 2:20 p.m. Friday.
The suspects fled in a vehicle, a 2025 BMW, before crashing into a canal in the area of Loxahatchee Road and Nob Hill Road in Parkland.
One suspect, 26-year-old Anthony Davis, of Plantation, was taken into custody as the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded.
The other two suspects couldn’t be found and at the time it was unknown if they were still in the canal or had fled on foot.
BSO Aviation, K-9, drone and divers searched and Friday evening, divers found the two suspects dead in the canal, BSO officials said.
They were later identified as Jerome Turner, 32, and Kelby Broward-Richardson, 31.
Davis was booked into jail on charges of robbery by sudden snatching with a firearm and resisting an officer without violence, records showed.
Sunrise Police are investigating the initial armed robbery.
BSO investigators said excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor to the crash, which also remains under investigation.
