2 arrested during Cinco de Mayo celebrations on South Street, police say

A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday, police said, when a “large crowd” gathered to celebrate Cinco de Mayo along South Street in Philly’s Old City neighborhood.

According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, at about 9:40 p.m. on Tuesday, police responded to reports of large crowds gathering at the intersection of 5th and South streets in Old City.

At that time, officers dispersed the crowd, but Small said, a man and a woman were arrested during the incident.

Small did not immediately detail the reason for the arrests or specify the charges against the pair.

But, he said, once the crowd was dispersed on Tuesday night, officers lingered along South Street for the remainder of the evening’s Cinco de Mayo events to ensure unruly crowds did not return to the area.
