SEPTA to launch feature allowing tap-to-pay for up to 5 riders at a time
Starting Friday, SEPTA users will be able to use tap-to-pay to cover the fares for up to five riders at a time.
The multi-rider feature is currently only available when using a SEPTA Key card, but that will change starting Friday, May 8. Officials said the feature’s expansion is intended to offer more convenience for groups who may not want to plan their trips in advance, purchase a physical Key card, or use cash to pay for their fares.
SEPTA said this feature comes just in time as the region gets ready to welcome visitors from all over the world for the PGA Championship, FIFA World Cup, MLB All Star Game, and America’s 250th celebrations.
“Rolling out this technology is another way we are making SEPTA easier to navigate for both first-time
visitors and regular riders,” said SEPTA General Manager Scott A. Sauer. “With the influx of people
expected to flood the system this summer, the multi-rider feature will make travel more efficient and
seamless for groups heading to the sports complex and other destinations across the city and region.”
According to SEPTA, contactless payment usage is up 20% from last year, representing more than 50% of bus and metro, and 23% of Regional Rail single trip purchases. Moreover, during large events, contactless payments spike by as much as 25%, officials said.
The new feature will be available for riders on all modes — including buses, subways, trolleys and the Regional Rail.
