Police impersonators face charges in Pennsylvania Turnpike shooting

Three men face attempted murder charges after police said they impersonated officers, pulled over a family and opened fire during a robbery attempt on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 28. A couple and their child left a relative’s home in Philadelphia. They got into their minivan to head back to their home out of state.

Police said the family was carrying a bag of cash meant for a family business investment.

While they were driving home, police said their minivan was immediately followed from Philadelphia onto the expressway by two vehicles, a Honda CR-V and a dark Chevrolet Suburban outfitted with police lights.

As they drove along the Turnpike in Chester County, the couple reported seeing what appeared to be police lights flashing in their rearview mirror. They pulled over in Tredyffrin Township, believing it was a traffic stop.

Police said investigation revealed that 21-year-old Tuften Green, 51-year-old Roberto Morel and 38-year-old Terrell Adams followed the victims and attempted to rob them. Green and Adams utilized red and blue lights while they were driving a Chevrolet Suburban so the victims would pull off the side of the road.

According to police, Morel was following the Chevrolet Suburban in another vehicle. Green and Adams approached the vehicle and told the victims they were police officers. When the victims became suspicious, Green shot the driver in the chest.

The other passengers, a woman and a 3-year-old child, were not hit, despite multiple shots being fired.

After the shooting, police said Green, Adams and Morel all fled the scene.

Along the Turnpike, police recovered ballistic evidence and made contact with an off-duty detective who was driving nearby at the time of the shooting. Police said the detective had dash camera video showing the vehicles speeding away.

Investigators used that video along with license plate readers to trace the vehicles, their movements and the timeline of how the family was targeted.

In the court documents, police said they not only have video of the car on the route to and from the shooting scene but the suspects’ cell phones placed them in the areas of the shooting at the time shots were fired.

Its unclear at this time if the suspects were tipped off about that cash the family had.

Morel and Adams were taken into custody and are charged with attempted murder and other related charges, police said. There is currently an active arrest warrant for Green, relating to the same charges.
