PA Turnpike testing system that will warn drivers about stopped or slow traffic

Drivers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will see new warnings when traffic backs up.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, announced they are piloting a new advanced warning system designed to alert drivers about stopped or slow traffic ahead.

Officials said the Queue Warning System (QWS) uses real-time traffic detection to identify backlogs and then provides an alert to drivers via the portable changeable message signage.

The equipment detects slow-moving or stopped traffic, which triggers an alert. Two messages are then displayed to travelers ahead: the first message appears approximately two miles away, while the second message is shown about half a mile away from the slow-moving vehicles.

The system operates in sync with traffic conditions and can be adjusted based on any backlogs.

“This QWS is a unique initiative that supports advanced communication to customers ahead of roadway work, providing more time for our customers to safely slow down,” said Tom Macchione, Director of Traffic Engineering & Operations for the PA Turnpike. “Keeping customers informed of what is ahead, supports roadway safety and helps protect our workers who are working along the roadway.”

Officials said the QWS system will debut on the Northeast Extension this week.

During this new pilot, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, will evaluate the effectiveness of this new system.
