Several people hospitalized after apartment catches fire in Newark, Delaware

An investigation is underway after an apartment fire left several people injured in Newark, Delaware early Tuesday.

According to fire officials, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, just after 9 a.m., several crews responded to the 800 block of Marrows Road at the Brookside Plaza Apartment in Newark after receiving reports of a fire.

Officials said when crews got to the scene, they found a three-story apartment building with smoke showing and all of the residents had self-evacuated.

When crews entered the building, officials said they found fire in a first-floor apartment and in the common hallway. The fire was placed under control nearly 30 minutes later.

Six people at the scene were evaluated and treated by emergency medical services, officials shared. One person was treated and transported to a nearby hospital for burns and three other people were transported for smoke inhalation.

Officials reported that two other individuals declined both treatment and transport to a hospital.

It is unclear at this time what started the fire. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
