‘I want my mom': Man accused of killing Miami Gardens minister yells at judge

A man who police say bound and killed a Miami Gardens minister and her grandson back in 2013 stormed out of court on Wednesday while rejecting a plea deal.

Reginald Louis Jackson, 40, and Roderick Martin, 39, are charged with two counts of first-degree murder, robbery, kidnapping and burglary charges among others in connection with the double murder.

Minister Annette Anderson, 69, and her grandson Tyrone Lenard Walker Jr., 20, were found bound, with gunshot wounds to the back of their heads, inside a home at 3451 Northwest 207th Street in Miami in July 2013.

Police believe the victims’ items were stolen, including Anderson’s cell phone, her debit card, and her television along with Walker’s Xbox game console and debit card, according to records.

In 2013, police charged Anderson with the murder, while Martin was charged in 2015.

After more than a decade of delays, on Wednesday it appeared the cases were going to be resolved in a plea deal, instead of trial.

However, when Jackson was brought into court by Miami-Dade Corrections, he noticed his elderly mother was not in the courtroom.

“I want my mom,” Jackson yelled.

After initially rejecting the plea Tuesday, on Wednesday Jackson was set to take a 40-year prison deal while Martin would accept a 25-year offer.

However, Jackson became furious after noticing his family was not in the courtroom, as he would have wanted, before being sentenced.

According to Jackson, his family were at some point present in the courthouse but were told by staff that his case was not going to be addressed Wednesday.

Judge Ellen Sue Venzer mentioned Jackson and Martin’s cases were not supposed to be addressed Wednesday, but she agreed to call them only because she was told by defense attorneys that they would be pleading guilty.

Jackson stood up, while still being handcuffed to Martin, and continued to yell profanities at the judge claiming he was being mistreated.

Jackson walked out and refused to come back into the courtroom, despite being told his sister had arrived, therefore denying the plea deal.

Martin, who was forced to follow Jackson because he was handcuffed, eventually came back into the courtroom solo.

However, Martin rejected taking his plea deal because he refused to cooperate with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s and refused to flip on Jackson. Without his cooperation, where he could testify against Jackson in trial, prosecutors were unwilling to offer him a deal solo.

Jackson and Martin will now head to trial in May, where they face life in prison if found guilty.
