Charges dropped against mom accused of stalking Miami-Dade cop who killed her son

Prosecutors have dropped criminal charges against a South Florida mother accused of stalking the officer who shot and killed her son nearly four years ago.

In June of 2022, Officer Jamie Pino with the Miami-Dade Police Department, now known as the Sheriff’s Office, fatally shot 21-year-old Richard Hollis after records stated he noticed him holding “two nine-inch chef knives in an aggressive manner.”

The incident happened at an apartment complex in the 8000 block of Southwest 149th Avenue.

Pino claimed he was forced to shoot, and after reviewing the case, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office decided the officer’s actions were justified, a decision that the victim’s mother, Gamaly Hollis, has never agreed with.

“I’m gonna kill your son”

In April of 2024, NBC6 exclusively obtained body camera video where Pino confronted Gamaly Hollis 10 months before the killing, about her son’s mental health issues.

“Ma’am I don’t know how to tell you this but I have been here before. The last time I went to Baker Act your child you wanted to stop me,” Pino told her on Aug. 10, 2021 according to the body camera video. “Your child is an adult and you can’t control him…you are wasting our time. This is a waste of our time. Because if you don’t like the way we work, don’t call us.”

Police were responding to the Hollis household. Body camera video from that same day also showed Pino stating he was willing to kill her son.

“If you have a problem with the way police deal with your son, like you had the problem last time, don’t call us. We are not social workers, we are police officers,” said Pino. “If your son takes a BB gun or a real gun out on me, I’m gonna kill your son.”

Ten months after that interaction was caught on body camera, police officers were called again after residents heard screaming inside the Hollis household.

Police said Pino tased Richard Hollis because he had knives, but it had no effect. The officer later fatally shot him. The medical examiner’s office ruled Richard Hollis’ cause of death to be gunshot wounds. He had six different entrance wounds.

Mother Arrested

The grieving mother was arrested two months after her son was killed for stalking and resisting an officer. Police records stated she entered an active crime scene while trying to look for Pino, who was the subject of a police-involved shooting.

Video showed Gamaly Hollis pulling up to a crime scene and telling Pino “you killed my son” in Spanish. Pino was heard responding, “I did. I’m sorry. Maybe if you did a better job there wouldn’t be a problem.”

Gamaly Hollis was eventually arrested on charges of stalking, resisting an officer, and violating an injunction.

Her defense attorneys previously argued Hollis’ charges should be dropped because she was just trying to expose government misconduct.

She was eventually found guilty of violating the stay-away order against the officer. A judge sentenced her to about a year in jail. She appealed, but the Third District Court of Appeals affirmed, according to prosecutors.

Pending Charges

On Thursday, Hollis learned that about four years after her arrest, prosecutors had dropped the remaining stalking and resisting an officer charges.

Prosecutors told NBC6 that their office spoke with Pino and that he had advised that Hollis had not done anything recently that would concern him.

The prosecutors added that they advised Pino, “we saw no reason to continue prosecuting her in light of (a) the fact she already was adjudicated on the violation of injunction charge and served 364 days in jail; and (b) has been complying with the injunction for some time.”

After Pino green lit the dismissal of charges, Chief Assistant Stephan K. Talpins announced the drop of charges Thursday morning during Gamaly Hollis’ hearing.

In response to the drop in charges, she told NBC6, “I was in jail for no reason. I lost everything, especially my son. I feel very ashamed about the justice system and the killer who is still working in the police department.”

Pino was cleared from any wrongdoing by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.
