Carjacking suspect fled from officers, crashed in Fort Lauderdale, cops say

A Plantation carjacking suspect was taken into custody after fleeing from officers and crashing in Fort Lauderdale on Friday morning, authorities said.

The carjacking happened around 7 a.m. when the victim said an ex-boyfriend had battered her and forcibly stolen her car in the 1100 block of N. University Drive, Plantation Police officials said.

About an hour later, just before 8 a.m., Fort Lauderdale officers spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the Plantation carjacking, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said.

Officers tried to stop the car but the driver fled and eventually crashed into a fence at 660 Long Island Avenue, police said.

The suspect bailed out of the vehicle and tried to flee but was taken into custody with the help of a K9, officials said.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC6 showed the suspect running through backyards and hopping a fence as officers pursued him.

Plantation Police said the suspect, 27-year-old Edwin Torres Terrero, is facing charges of carjacking, simple battery, fleeing and eluding, and driving without a valid driver’s license.

He also had several warrants from Osceola County for false imprisonment and dating violence, police said.

There were no injuries but the fence and a parked car were damaged in the incident, officials said.
