Burglary suspect crashed into home while fleeing in SW Miami-Dade, deputies say

A burglary suspect crashed a vehicle into a home in southwest Miami-Dade while fleeing from deputies early Wednesday, officials said.

Deputies had initially responded to reports of a residential burglary in progress in the area of Southwest 58th Avenue and Southwest 47th Street and discovered a suspicious vehicle, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The deputies tried to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle fled before crashing into the front of a home in the area of Southwest 62nd Terrace and 58th Avenue, across from the University of Miami.

The suspect tried to then flee on foot but was quickly taken into custody, officials said.

“I’m in a deep sleep and I hear this noise, don’t know what it is. So I get up and I open the door to see what’s going on. And there’s a car parked on my lawn and somebody on the ground,” said the man who lives in the home. “I’ve heard loud noises before, like thunder and stuff like that, but this was definitely different. You could tell there was some sort of, you know, a judger from the noise, you could tell there was some sort of an impact.”

Video from the scene showed a blue SUV resting in a front lawn after it appeared to have gone through a fence and struck part of a pink home.

The car was left with visible damage to its front, and its air bags were deployed. A column in front of the home was also knocked down.

Officials said the suspect, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance. His identity wasn’t released.

Investigators determined there was no residential burglary at the original address, but detectives were able to recover items from a vehicle burglary that took place at a nearby home, officials said.

The incident remains under investigation.
