Arsonist sets fire to infant department at Philly Walmart, police say

An investigation is underway after someone intentionally set fire to the infant department at a Philadelphia Walmart store, police said.

The incident occurred on Sunday, May 3, at the Walmart store on 1675 South Christopher Columbus Boulevard. An assistant manager at the store was alerted around 8:25 p.m. of a fire within the store’s infant department.

The manager spotted flames and smoke in the infant section and used a store extinguisher to put out the fire before it spread to surrounding aisles, police said.

Firefighters and emergency crews later responded to the store to secure the area and make sure customers and staff were safe. No injuries were reported.

Investigators determined the fire was intentionally set and the incident was ruled an arson. While investigators reviewed video surveillance footage, a suspect has not been identified. Police continue to investigate.
