Shocking video shows United jet striking delivery truck during landing at Newark Airport
Stunning video appears to show the moment of impact as a United Airlines jet hit a tractor-trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike Sunday, making a loud boom as the driver’s dashcam spins in a swirl of shattered glass.
It was about 2 p.m. Sunday when Flight 169, arriving from Venice, Italy, hit a Baker’s Express truck as it traveled south on the Turnpike. The truck was hauling products from Schmidt Bakery in Baltimore, Maryland, to a distribution center near Newark Airport.
Video footage from inside the truck shows the driver singing to himself. Suddenly, he he hears a loud noise and glances up at his rearview mirror. Audio from inside the cab sounds like the loud whistling of a jet landing.
Then the plane’s landing gear tire hits, sending debris flying everywhere.
Chuck Paterakis, senior vice president of transportation and logistics at H&S Bakery, the parent company of Schmidt Bakery, said the driver suffered minor injuries, including glass in his arm and hand. He is expected to make a full recovery.
“It’s a miracle. It could have been traumatically worse,” Paterakis said.
The plane also hit a light pole just before the impact with the truck, authorities said. That pole flew into a Jeep, though no one was hurt in the SUV.
The Boeing 767 landed safely, the Federal Aviation Administration said. There was minor damage to the aircraft. None of the 231 people aboard the plane were hurt.
United Airlines said the Flight 169 crew was removed from service pending an investigation.
“We will conduct a rigorous flight safety investigation into the incident,” United said in a statement Sunday night.
The FAA and the National Transportation Board are also investigating.
