1 hurt after car strikes police cruiser, drives into building in West Philly

Police say an investigation is underway and a person has been hospitalized after a driver struck a Philly police cruiser in a crash, then fled and ran into a building in West Philly overnight.

Officials said the incident unfolded after a blue Tesla vehicle struck a police cruiser in a crash that happened at about 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of South St. Bernard and Spruce streets in West Philadelphia.

After that incident, officials said, the driver behind the wheel of the Tesla pulled away from the crash and sped down South 50th Street before they crashed into a building at the intersection of 50th and Walnut streets.

After the second crash, officials said, one person was taken to a nearby hospital. However, police did not immediately provide further information on this individual or the severity of their injuries.

A witness told NBC10’s Lili Zheng that the injured individual was in a third vehicle that was also believed to have been involved in this incident.

The driver of the Tesla, the witness said, was still believed to be on the run after fleeing the scene of the crash.

Police also did not say if any officers were injured when the hit-and-run crash occurred.

But, NBC10 has reached out to police and is working to learn more.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
