Woman shot and killed after trying to break into home in North Philly: Police

A woman has died after getting shot multiple times in a home in North Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon, police said.

According to Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace, the woman was shot after she tried to break into a home through a window. The owner of the home was inside at the time, warned the woman to stop, but she continued to try to break in.

The resident, who is legally eligible to carry a firearm, ended up shooting the woman and the incident is being treated as a possible act of self-defense, Pace said. The homeowner stayed on the scene, tried to render aid before medics arrived and is cooperating with investigators.

“At some point, the occupants of the home did make themselves known that they were inside, and this person refused to, based on the information we have, refused to stop,” Pace said.

The woman is currently being identified as a Jane Doe, Pace said, and it is unclear why she was attempting to break in at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, Pace said.

Officers initially responded to reports of gunfire at the 2300 block of N. Cleveland Street at around 1:13 p.m. There, they found an adult woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:49 p.m., police said.

Anyone with any information on the incident is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or anonymously online here.

This shooting is the fifth reported shooting in Philadelphia this weekend so far.
