New imaging center coming to Philadelphia aims to expand access to care
A new specialized healthcare facility is coming to the City of Brotherly Love.
The Black Doctors Consortium at the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity broke ground on their new Imaging Center in Philadelphia.
The new Imaging Center will provide access to X-Ray, Mammography, CT, and Ultrasounds, marking a transformative step in bringing critical diagnostic services directly into communities.
Congressman Dwight Evans helped secure federal funding that helped bring this new facility to life.
“The Black Doctors Consortium has demonstrated that those who would served by this funding, despite the facility being located outside of PA-2, would be dispersed across parts of North Philadelphia that would include my constituents, particularly those who are plagued by the multiple social determinants of health, will speak to the community’s need, alongside Dr. Ala Stanford.” Congressman Brendan Boyle said in a news release.
Stanford, a practicing physician for more than 20 years and board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in both pediatric and adult general surgery, rose to prominence in Philadelphia for her work responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She received national recognition in April 2020 when she founded the Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium, which focused on testing and vaccinating Philadelphia residents against the coronavirus, especially those in the African American community who had been disproportionately affected during the pandemic.
In 2022, Biden had also appointed Stanford as the HHS Regional Director of Region 3 as part of his administration’s effort to rebuild communities impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Then in 2024, she was appointed Professor of Practice in Biology at the University of Pennsylvania with two additional appointments in the Perelman School of Medicine and Annenberg School for Communication.
Stanford is one of four Democrats running to succeed Evans and represent Pennsylvania’s 3rd congressional district in the House.
She is also a medical correspondent for local and national news outlets.
