Man accused of robbing dollar store with Alphanso Talley before Swedish Hospital shooting detained
A Cook County judge ordered a Maywood man detained Friday after he allegedly robbed a dollar store with Alphanso Talley shortly before the Swedish Hospital shooting that killed Chicago police officer John Bartholomew and left another cop critically wounded.
Jeron Tate, 18, is charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery, aggravated kidnapping and unlawful restraint, police announced.
Tate, who appeared for a detention hearing Friday, is on juvenile parole for "multiple" armed robberies and he targeted Family Dollar stores, including the attack last Saturday with Talley, who is accused of shooting two police officers, one fatally after the robbery, court documents said.
Prosecutors alleged Tate constitutes, a "real and present threat," to the community before the judge ordered him detained. Tate is due back in court on May 20.
Tate and Talley allegedly showed up at a Family Dollar store, 3239 W. Lawrence Ave., around 8 a.m. Saturday, prosecutors said. The two were masked, and Talley allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband when a store clerk told them to leave a bag at the front of the store.
Talley took the 55-year-old woman to the back of the store and struck her in the face with the gun before demanding that she open a cash register and a safe, prosecutors said. The clerk said she didn’t have the keys, so Talley pistol-whipped her again. She suffered a broken nose and two black eyes, prosecutors said.
After Talley “dragged” the clerk back to the cash register, she was able to open it, prosecutors said. Talley made off with just $110, the clerk’s keys and her wallet.
As Talley and Tate fled on Lime scooters, the clerk called police, prosecutors said. Talley was captured on video tossing the clerk’s wallet into a garbage can, and was taken into custody a short time later with a bloody bundle of cash in his pocket.
Eventually, Talley complained he’d swallowed five bags of drugs and he was taken to Swedish Hospital, where he fatally shot Bartholomew and gravely wounded another officer.
Talley, who was naked and carrying his gown after escaping from the hospital, was found over an hour after the shooting in the 2600 block of West Carmen Avenue, hiding under a porch.
