Girl, 8, describes constant abuse by stepmother in Deerfield Beach, report says

New details were released on Tuesday after a mother in Deerfield Beach was arrested for allegedly abusing her 8-year-old stepdaughter.

Melirose Joncky, 42, was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect of a child with great bodily harm, records showed.

During her court appearance on Friday, a judge denied Joncky’s bond.

According to authorities, on April 9, a school counselor at Tedder Elementary School in Deerfield Beach reported to the Broward Sheriff’s Office that she had concerns that one of her students was a victim of child abuse.

An arrest affidavit said the student came to the school with two black eyes, had a large contusion on her forehead, dried blood coming from her ears, and had multiple scratches on her arms and neck.

The school counselor asked the child what happened, and she said her stepmother was the one who caused her injuries, the report said. The victim also said that the reason she was wearing a cast on her arm was that her stepmother had injured her.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived at the school and took the student to the hospital to get evaluated, the report said.

At the hospital, the report said, deputies met with the victim, and she described the abuse that she received from her stepmother.

According to the victim, on April 8, her stepmother pushed her to the ground, pulled her by the feet so that she would be on her stomach, and then walked on her back and also jumped up and down on it, the report said.

Joncky, the report said, then grabbed the victim’s head and slammed it into the floor. The victim described other instances of abuses such as Joncky using phone chargers to hit her, which caused lacerations on her arms, legs, back and face.

The victim also told deputies that when she lived with her father in Indiana, he sexually assaulted her, the report said.

She was then taken to Broward General Hospital for a forensic evaluation, which corroborated how she received her injuries, the report said.

Joncky was taken into custody, and the Florida Department of Children and Families took custody of her two minor children.
