Atlantic County sees significant drop in drug overdose deaths

Drug-related deaths in Atlantic County have declined significantly over the past several years, according to new data released by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Wednesday, April 15, officials released recent data showing a sharp drop in drug-related deaths over the past five years, along with year-to-date figures. The prosecutor’s office credited the downward trend to a countywide effort that combines criminal intelligence, targeted enforcement, proactive investigations, and expanded access to treatment and recovery services.

“We are not done. We will continue to adapt, collaborate, and act with purpose to ensure this
progress continues and more lives are saved,” said Prosecutor William Reynolds.

2021: 191
2022: 255
2023: 179
2024: 159
2025: 86
2026 (Year to Date): 11

The prosecutor’s office said it has also intensified efforts to identify, investigate and prosecute those who distribute heroin, fentanyl, and other deadly narcotics throughout the county.

“Those who profit from addiction by peddling this poison will be identified, investigated, and
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Reynolds said.

Officials also said it is important to acknowledge that does suffering with addiction require intervention and not incarceration.

“Individuals battling addiction are not the enemy. They are members of our community who need
help. We are committed to meeting them with resources, treatment, and a pathway to recovery,” Reynolds added.
