‘That was my son': Family heartbroken after man killed in rollover crash in Miami-Dade
The family of a man who was killed in a rollover crash in Miami-Dade County in February involving two tow trucks remains heartbroken.
NBC6 on Sunday spoke to Albert Montoto’s family two months after he was killed, who said they’re still waiting for justice to be served.
On February 14, Montoto was celebrating his birthday, and two days later, he was gone.
He was a son, a brother, a boyfriend, and is being remembered by the people who loved him most.
“He was perfect,” his girlfriend said. There’s no other way to put it. He was super nice to everybody. He was the best brother, the best son that you could imagine.”
“He was the best brother, the best son you could imagine,” his mother said. “That was my son.”
The fatal crash has now left a family heartbroken.
“I only lost him a year, and I loved him so much. How could his parents feel? I don’t know,” his girlfriend said. “That’s all I could think about when I thought that there was no way.”
Dash cam video shows the moment everything changed.
The crash happened along Old Dixie Highway in Southwest 288th Street in Homestead.
Montoto was killed, and his brother-in-law remains in a coma.
“There’s no words that could describe what I was going through that day,” his mother said. It’s like, that’s the mother’s worst nightmare.”
So far, no charges have been filed.
“That’s what hurts the most, that my son is dead and the other driver is just walking on the streets like nothing happened,” she said.
The State Attorney’s Office said, “A traffic fatality alone does not mean that a violation of Florida’s criminal statutes has occurred. Only evidence that a violation of Florida’s criminal statutes has occurred would merit a criminal charge.”
But Montoto’s family said that the evidence is already there.
They shared the crash report with NBC6 that states “vehicle one failed to stop at a solid red light and its front bumper area crashed into vehicle two.”
“This is not an accident; that’s reckless driving,” his mother said
The investigation is still ongoing.
NBC6 reached out to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office’s homicide unit, and is still waiting for a response back.
