Sen. Dave McCormick talks Sen. John Fetterman's political future

A recent report describes a Republican effort to flip Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) from the Democratic party to the GOP.

As Sen. Fetterman faces criticism from some Democrats and praise from some Republicans, his colleague, Senator Dave McCormick says he has not talked to Fetterman about switching parties but “would welcome him.”

The comments come after recent reporting in Politico described a Republican effort to convince Fetterman to switch parties or become an independent.

“I’ve never talked to him about changing parties, honestly,” McCormick told NBC10’s Lauren Mayk. “I feel blessed to have him as my colleague, we’ve developed a real relationship of trust.”

McCormick said the two Pennsylvania lawmakers talk about issues that come up and what they feel is best for Pennsylvania.

“I think the thing about him that’s kind of unique is he is willing to buck his party – often on issues I completely agree with him whether it’s Iran or antisemitism or fracking, and that’s the one thing I appreciate most about him,” McCormick said.

Asked whether he would want Fetterman as part of the Republican Party, McCormick said that’s up to Fetterman.

“Well look I think it’s most important that he decides what he wants,” McCormick said. “I’d welcome him of course.”

NBC10 has reached out to Sen. Fetterman’s office for comment on the reported effort regarding his party affiliation, and whether he plans to run for re-election in 2028.
