Man charged in death of woman found strangled in Greater Grand Crossing apartment

A man whose lawyer turned him in was charged in the death of a woman found strangled Monday night in Greater Grand Crossing on the South Side.

Travion Cooper, 30, was charged with first degree murder, Chicago police said.

Terriyanna Johnson, 29, was found around 8:40 p.m. Monday inside an apartment in the 500 block of East 72nd Street in Greater Grand Crossing. She died of strangulation and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which conducted the autopsy on Tuesday.

Police learned of Johnson’s killing when a criminal defense attorney called to say a dead person was at the Greater Grand Crossing location, and his client wanted to surrender, according to police reports obtained by the Sun-Times.

Cooper, of Chicago, was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
