Loved ones demand answers after man on e-bike killed in crash with Coral Springs police
Loved ones are demanding answers from the Coral Springs Police Department after a man was struck and killed by a marked vehicle while riding his e-bike on Friday.
According to police, it happened at 9:41 p.m. near the 4300 block of Riverside Drive. They confirmed the crash involved a marked unit.
The man on the e-bike, 60-year-old Guy Scott, was rushed to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
His wife, Lyane Mendoza, and his neighbors said they want answers about how Scott, who they knew to be a safe rider, could have been fatally hit.
“It’s horrible. It’s like somebody took my life, my heart,” Mendoza told NBC6.
She said she and her husband had been married for five years and together for nearly 14 before tragedy struck while she was at work.
“Our roommate said, ‘Come back, come back. Your husband is bleeding in the road,'” Mendoza said. “I feel guilty because I not was here… if I was here, I would immediately been in charge of the situation.”
Video from the scene show Scott lying in the sidewalk as dozens of neighbors rushed out of their homes and other officers arrived.
“Boom. Hit my husband on the bike. His bike was a strong, heavy, electric bike,” Mendoza said.
Witnesses who saw the crash unfold spoke with NBC6 off camera, saying the police car did not have its lights or sirens on before the impact sent Scott flying down the street.
“For such a well lit area, it’s just hard for me to understand how exactly he collided with the Tahoe if the Tahoe wasn’t going an exceptional speed,” one neighbor said. “There is a street light right where it happened.”
“The cops speed up and down here, I mean, generally people speed up and down here,” she added.
NBC6 has reached out to the Coral Springs Police Department about the allegations. They said the investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors described Scott as a careful rider. They said he always wore a helmet covered in Christmas lights and had lights on the front and back of his bike.
Family members remember him as a beautiful soul, a chef, and someone who loved to play guitar. But most of all, they recall a man who loved everyone around him.
Scott was “a good person, a sensitive person,” his wife said. “He cared about people, about kids, about animals, about human beings.”
Safety, loved ones said, was always top of mind for Scott. He even helped to install a stop sign outside of his home a few years back, they said.
Police said at this time, no bodycam footage or 911 calls of the crash are releasable to the public. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information relating to it should contact Officer Reinoso at 954-346-1269.
