Florida man charged with attempted murder after following girlfriend, shooting at car
A Florida man accused of following his estranged girlfriend and shooting at her vehicle in Palm Beach County was arrested on Monday, deputies said.
Geoffrey Moreno, 26, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and missing in a dwelling or vehicle.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, the victim drove to the sheriff’s office in West Palm Beach because she said she was being chased by Moreno.
The two have a child together and have been sporadically dating for about nine years.
An arrest report said that the two were at a waterpark in West Chapel, and the victim locked her keys in the car when they parked. When Moreno called a locksmith on his phone, the victim give her phone so he could put the locksmith’s phone number.
But when Moreno got the victim’s phone, he started reviewing her messages and call history and got upset when he saw a missed call from the victim’s previous boyfriend, the report said. Moreno then called her insults, and the two left the waterpark and headed back to Palm Beach County, as he continued to berate the victim while being armed with a pistol.
When the two got back to Palm Beach, the report said, the victim dropped Moreno off at his home, and two hours later, the two started to argue over the phone, and the victim confronted him, accusing him of impregnating one of their childhood friends. Moreno then threatened to drive over to the victim’s father’s house to beat her.
After hearing the threat, the victim left the home and started traveling on the road when she saw Moreno’s vehicle, the report said.
As the victim kept driving, the report said, she saw Moreno do an illegal U-turn, and she continued driving to avoid him, but at one point, Moreno started driving recklessly, got in her lane and went directly in front of the victim’s vehicle.
The victim then started backing up, and Moreno got out of his car, threatened to kill her, pulled out a gun and fired one shot at the victim’s vehicle, the report said.
She then drove herself to the sheriff’s office.
During their investigation, deputies reviewed surveillance footage from the intersections where the victim and Moreno were driving, and were able to corroborate the victim’s account of what had happened, the report said. While inspecting the victim’s car, detectives were able to find a single bullet defect on the driver’s door.
On Monday, the report said, the victim’s father got a call from Moreno, who said “Either you or your daughter, but someone is going out tonight.
Records show that Moreno has had a history of domestic disputes with the victim, and in September 2023, he was detained during a traffic stop, where officers found a pistol with an extended magazine under the seat.
Moreno was then taken into custody.
