FIU student celebrates graduation with award-winning short film
Graduation season is in full swing across South Florida—but for one student at Florida International University, crossing the stage represents more than just earning a degree.
For senior Saylid Lopez, it marks the beginning of a filmmaking journey already gaining international attention.
Her short film, “A Forever Kind of Thing,” is a deeply personal project—one she says helped define her purpose.
“It took me about four months, and it’s a very passionate thing of mine,” she told NBC6.
The film follows two friends from childhood through old age, highlighting the strength and resilience found in lifelong friendship. Lopez says the inspiration came from a bond close to home her relationship with her cousin.
“There’s a lot of challenges that these friends go through in the film, and I wanted to highlight the power of friendship,” she said.
The film has already earned award nominations and was featured at the Miami Film Festival. She’s gained recognition internationally, including at the Toronto International Women Film Festival.
Lopez credits FIU for helping her discover her passion—and encourages other students still searching for their path to stay patient.
“For students who are still confused about the major they want to choose—don’t stress about it,” she advises. “You figure it out along the way.”
For Lopez, this is just the beginning. She’ll walk across the stage at Florida International University later this month and her film will continue its run on the festival circuit through the end of the year.
