Trader Joe's class action settlement: See if you're eligible for $102 payout

If you’ve used a credit or debit card to pay for your groceries at Trader Joe’s, you may be eligible to receive a payout as part of a $7.4 million class action lawsuit settlement.

The California-based grocery chain has agreed to settle claims that it violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act by printing sales receipts that displayed sensitive financial information, opening customer’s up to potential identity theft.

According to the complaint, plaintiff Brian Keim said he used a Visa debt card to make a purchase at a Trader Joe’s in Palm Beach, Florida, in July 2019 and noticed that his receipt contained the first six and last four digits of his card number — more than half of the card’s 16 numbers. The disclosure, Keim argues, “invaded his privacy by disclosing his private financial information to the store employee who provided the receipt and anyone else who sees the receipt,” according to the lawsuit.

While the receipt did not include other identifiable information such as expiration date, customer name or customer address, under FACTA, businesses are barred from printing more than the last five digits of a person’s debit or credit card.

Trader Joe’s denied the allegations and any wrongdoing, noting in the settlement website that not all stores printed receipts displaying the first six and last four digits of the card number, and in the stores that did, only a small number of transactions involved these types of receipts.

The company said it was settling the suit to avoid “the risk and cost” of litigation. A Trader Joe’s spokesperson declined to comment and referred NBC to the settlement website.

Who is eligible to receive money from the Trader Joe’s settlement?

According to the settlement website, customers who used their credit or debit card to make a purchase at a Trader Joe’s store between March 5, 2019 and July 19, 2019, and received a receipt that displayed the first six and last four digits of the card number.

Additionally, some customers may receive an email or postcard about the settlement, indicating that records from their payment processing software indicate they were impacted and are eligible for a claim.

How to file a claim

To receive a payment, you must submit a Settlement Claim Form by June 9, 2026. If you have a Class ID number, Settlement Claim Forms may be submitted by mail to Keim v. Trader Joe’s Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 301134, Los Angeles, CA 90030-1134, or through this website, or by calling 1-888-444-7415.

The deadline for Trader Joe’s to fund the settlement is 10 business days after final approval is granted. Your settlement check can be cashed for up to 180 days after the issuance date stated on the check.

How much will I receive from the Trader Joe’s settlement?

The amount will depend on the number of settlement claims received. However, the settlement notice estimates that the payout for each member will be $102.45.
