Marcello Hernandez does Met Gala debut with azabache, shoutout to Calle Ocho jeweler
Marcello Hernandez keeps on repping Miami.
The Cuban-Dominican comedian and SNL star walked the red carpet at the Met Gala for the first time on Monday night, alongside his girlfriend, architect Ana Amelia Battle Cabral.
The pair exchanged pleasantries with livestream host La La Anthony in Spanish, before Hernandez not only spotlighted a South Florida business, but also introduced viewers to a part of his culture.
As Anthony asked the comedian about his ensemble, he replied that it was made by Thom Browne—”shoutout to Thom Browne”—embellished with details made by his mom.
“My mom made me this with Sammy jeweler [on] Calle Ocho in Miami,” he said with enthusiasm, pointing to a pin with stones on his breast pocket.
He went on to describe the accessory in his signature Spanglish.
“I have [my guardian angel charm], [an] azabache, a stone for protection, and larimar, which is a Dominican stone,” he said, before turning to his right arm. “And this is the traditional azabache with [God bless you] in Spanish.”
An azabache is an onyx stone used as a protective amulet in several Latin American cultures, particularly associated with Hernandez’s own Cuban roots.
Stay with NBC6 for more on the business that made the accessory, coming up on Tuesday evening.
