Fire crews tackle apartment fire in Philly's Fairhill section

A fire at an apartment in the Fairhill section on North Philly kept firefighters busy early Thursday.

According to fire officials, the incident began at about 4:20 a.m. when flames erupted from a property along the 1100 block of West Indiana Avenue.

Officials said no one was harmed in the incident and, early Thursday, the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections declared the building an unsafe structure.

A resident of the home, Larry Turpin, said the flames erupted from a lamp in his bedroom as he laid in bed.

“It started at a lamp right beside me,” he told NBC10. “I was in bed all day because I didn’t feel good and the lamp caught fire.”

Turpin and his partner attempted to put the flames out with water from a nearby bathroom. But, he said, it was no use.

“We couldn’t do anything to stop it so we got outta there,” he said.

Officials said an investigation into the incident is underway.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
