Bodycam shows deputy shoot armed man after chase and crash in West Little River
New video shows the moment a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy opened fire on a man who authorities said was armed and had fled from a traffic stop before crashing in West Little River back in February.
The incident happened back on Feb. 24 when the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said its robbery intervention team attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Northwest 17th Avenue and Northwest 71st Street.
The vehicle took off, and crashed into another car on Northwest 87th Street, authorities said.
As deputies approached the vehicle, the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old William Paulemon, got out of the vehicle armed, authorities said.
That’s when a deputy opened fire from inside his sheriff’s office vehicle.
In the body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office on Monday, there was no audio from the moment the deputy opened fire but he’s heard speaking on the radio afterwards.
“Shot fired, shots fired,” the deputy said. “Shots fired, he has a gun.”
Paulemon was shot in his “lower extremities” and was hospitalized.
The woman who was driving the other vehicle was uninjured. No deputies were hurt.
Neighbor Vincient Miles says he was inside his home and heard a crash and gunshots.
“I heard it crash through my fence and once it crashed through my fence I heard it hit the house,” he said.
Miles went outside and said he saw a car that almost hit his house.
“I said ‘thank you Lord, the air conditioning system is gone but the house is safe,'” Miles said.
He said he checked on a woman who was inside the car, the driver who detectives said Paulemon hit.
“She was a little shaken, but she told me ‘I’m your neighbor.’ I said ‘thank you for not hitting my house.’ She said ‘I was not trying to hit your house, I didn’t even mean to do this.’ I said ‘are you okay?’ She said ‘I’m fine,'” Miles said.
Investigators said Paulemon had one gun in his hand and another in his waistband.
Paulemon faces charges including attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, using or displaying a firearm while committing a felony, fleeing or eluding, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and reckless driving.
