Bank robbery suspect in custody after police chase comes to crashing end in Broward

A suspect was in custody following a bank robbery and a multi-agency pursuit that ended in a crash in Broward County, authorities said.

According to Plantation Police, officers responded before 4:30 p.m. to a reported robbery at TD Bank on North State Road 7, in which a man presented a note demanding money and fled the scene after receiving cash.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and police officers pursuing a red vehicle, police said.

The red vehicle was seen driving onto a sidewalk and through a barrier at one point as it fled.

The vehicle was also seen driving on the wrong side of the road and through intersections as it appeared to have blown a front tire.

The chase ended when an unmarked pickup truck performed a PIT maneuver and the vehicle lost control and crashed into a home’s concrete wall in the area of Northwest 31st Avenue and Northwest 2nd Street, just north of Broward Boulevard in Lauderhill.

Authorities were seen surrounding the vehicle and taking the driver into custody. He was placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a Plantation Police car.

The driver was identified as Tommy Duwayne Dennis, 56, who was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Charges are pending.

Devon Spicer said he was working in a construction zone when a red vehicle crashed through.

“We all just kind of looked at each other and said this is getting real,” Spicer said. “The sirens were getting closer.”

He pulled out his phone and started recording because the driver, police and deputies were coming straight towards them.

“Instead of turning, he just came straight and came right through our work zone and ran over cones and barricades, yeah, he was a man on a mission,” Spicer said.

Once the driver got through the work zone, he drove another mile and a half before he crashed. Police and deputies drew their guns as Dennis got out of the truck with his hands up.

“I figured he was going to crash into something, both of his front tires were flat, he wasn’t stopping,” Spicer said. “I mean I’m still a little nervous and shaking, my blood was pumping, that was crazy.”
